The bullet is the key to success.
When all is said and done, it is the terminal effect of the bullet which counts in the field. The sole purpose of the hunter and the rifle is to put the bullet in the right place so that the bullet can do its job. The finest equipment and hunters in the world are useless if the bullet fails to perform as designed when it hits an animal. The design objectives for any bullet can be expressed as a combination of penetration and expansion.
Penetration allows the bullet to get through the exterior and pass through the vital organs of the animal. Obviously, penetration must be in a straight line. The hunter can only pick an aiming point (on the surface of the animal) which is in line with the vital organs. If he puts the bullet on that aiming point, the bullet must penetrate in a straight line through the vitals. If it does not, that bullet is a failure.
Expansion enhances the shock transmission fro the bullet to the animal and also creates a larger wound channel through the vitals. Expansion must be balanced against penetration. On animals the size of elk and kudu, a raking shot which fails to penetrate the far lung, or a broadside shot which takes only the near lung, will result in a wounded animal. Total energy transfer (from the bullet to the animal) is philosophical bull and will normally not result in death unless the bullet passes through the vital organs.
The A-Square Triad gives the shooter three choices in the trade-off between penetration and expansion. The hunter should chose his bullet based upon the game to be hunted and his desired terminal effect upon the animal. The Dead Tough is the bullet of choice for hunting conditions where penetration and expansion are both needed. The Monolithic Solid is for penetration only, and the Lion Load for expansion only.
Plus, remember, only with the A-Square Triad can you mix bullets on such game as buffalo (Dead Tough in the chamber, Monolithic Solids in the bottom of the magazine) or bear (Lion Load in the chamber, Dead Tough in the magazine) with no change in zero or trajectory.
