SAAMI

MEMBER

The A-Square Company is one of only 19 members of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute. Other members include Olin-Winchester, Federal, USRAC, Ruger, Sig/Sauer, Remington, Weatherby, Mossberg, Browning, Hornady-Frontier, Alliant, Olin-St. Marks Powder, and Colt. The Technical Director of SAAMI is Kenneth Green.

SAAMI was founded prior to World War II at government request. The importance of SAAMI cannot be overstated. Though the standards of SAAMI are voluntary and comply with anti-trust legislation, the American shooter owes everything he has to SAAMI. The fact that a shooter can buy a round of .30-06 ammunition made by Federal and fire it in a rifle made by Remington (and all other such safe interchangeability issues) is solely the result of SAAMI work. All cartridges (including maximum cartridge and minimum chamber dimensions) are vetted and approved by the SAAMI Technical Committee and then included in the various standards documents. For SAAMI members, who have very rigorous requirements, there are a total of eleven manuals. The standards which apply to the shooting public are published by the American National Standards Institute and are listed as ANSI Z 299.1 through 299.5.

All other parts of the manuals are for SAAMI members and specify all of the various controls for pressure test barrels, pressure measuring equipment, pressure test methodology, and a myriad of other things. SAAMI members also (from their own pockets) maintain the entire reference ammunition system. The reference ammunition system consists of limited quantities of super-consistent ammunition in each and every caliber. This ammunition is constantly tested in round robin shooting amongst all SAAMI stations. This ammunition then becomes the basis for verifying the results of pressure test barrels and helps ensure that the ammunition available to the shooting public is properly loaded and tested, and is both safe and interchangeable within each caliber.

Though not well known to the shooting public, SAAMI is incredibly important. Shooters can have confidence in the safety of products made by SAAMI member companies. Some other companies who adhere to SAAMI standards, even though they are not members, likewise produce safe and correct product. With all others, the shooter has no guarantee and is strictly on his own.

A-Square is proud of its membership in SAAMI and its vital contribution to the shooting public. A-Square is proud to state that numerous cartridges were designed and SAAMI standardized, or resurrected and SAAMI standardized by the A-Square Company. These include the 6.5-06 A-Square, 7mm STW, .300 Pegasus, .338-06 A-Square, .338 Excalibur, .358 STA, .405 Winchester, .416 Taylor, .458 Lott, .470 Capstick, .500 A-Square, and the .577 Tyrannosaur. A-Square has also standardized cartridges for other companies, such as the .25-45 Sharps and the .50-70 Sharps Auto.

The photograph to the right shows a portion of A-Square's Ballistics Test Laboratory. This shows a SAAMI standard pressure barrel mounted in a Universal Bond Receiver mounted on the correct sled mount. Pressures are being taken by the Piezzo-Electric method, captured on signal conditioning hardware and recorded on specialized computer software shown on the monitor, which you can see here.
