In 1996, relatives of the victims of the bombings launched a campaign for a public inquiry. The group believed that that they had been forgotten by the Irish state and that British forces could have been involved in the bombings. A ‘Captain Craig’ telephoned the Irish News and Irish Times, claiming responsibility for the bombings on behalf of the ‘Red Hand Brigade’, which is believed to be a canopy name.
